Video: Sinus Lift |
|
Why would a sinus lift be needed?
The key to successful placement of dental implants is the quality and quantity of the bone where the implants are to be palced. The back of the upper jaw is a common area where bone quantity can be lacking, especially if teeth have been missing for an extended period of time. Also, the sinus cavities are located in this region and enlarge as we get older. A sinus lift, or augmentation, is a predictable and successful way to increase the quantity and height of the bone in this area so implants can be placed.
What is the sinus lift procedure?
The technique varies depending on your particular situation. The procedure used depends on your particular situation and the amount of bone augmentation needed. The most common technique is called a "lateral" approach.
The lateral sinus lift involves creating a small opening in the jawbone to gain access to the sinus cavity. This cavity is lined with a thin membrane, which is gently lifted up. The grafting material is then placed between the membrane and the bone. A protective covering is placed over the opening in the jawbone and the gums are sutured closed.
Sometimes the implant(s) can be placed at the same time as the sinus graft. This is determined by your particular situation and how much natural bone is present. Otherwise, we allow 4-6 months of healing before implant(s) can be placed.
